Case Study: Doctor-Patient Communication

Summer is now coming to an end but here at MLT we have not been resting on our laurels.

Although not strictly medicolegal, last week Jason worked on a complaint from the family of a deceased patient. The family were not happy with the communication given to the deceased’s wife in Spain during her late husband’s final days. The patient’s wife appeared to have difficulty communicating with her husband’s medical team and the family filed a written complaint with the hospital at issue.

Clearly, were this complaint to go down a legal route it would most likely flounder. The couple were living in Spain and Spanish is the official language spoken. However, it was a telling reminder that verbal communication is of paramount importance in the healthcare field.

Here’s what the client said

Thank you for your clear and precise translation of our father’s medical reports and written correspondence with the hospital.

And this is what we said

Our sincerest condolences to the family on your father’s passing. We hope the translation of the hospital’s reply served to mitigate the pain felt by the family over their loss.
